Fast, mobile-friendly websites: a guide for business owners

Why speed and mobile design decide whether visitors become customers, and the practical steps to make your site fast and easy to use on any phone.

Most people will see your website on a phone, often on the go, sometimes on a weak signal. If it's slow or awkward to use, they leave. This guide covers the three things that decide whether that visit turns into a customer: speed, mobile design and usability.

This guide brings together several of our older articles on responsive design, mobile websites, speed and user experience.

Why it matters

  • People are impatient. Each extra second of loading time costs you visitors, especially on mobile.
  • Google ranks the mobile version of your site. Google looks at your site the way a phone does. A poor mobile experience hurts your rankings everywhere.
  • Local customers are on their phones. "Near me" searches, directions and tap-to-call all happen on mobile.

Part 1: Speed

Measure first. Run your site through PageSpeed Insights and look at the mobile results. The three numbers Google cares about most (called Core Web Vitals) are:

  • LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how fast the main content appears. Aim for under 2.5 seconds.
  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how quickly the page responds when someone taps. Aim for under 200 milliseconds.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much things jump around while loading. Aim for under 0.1.

The usual fixes, in order of impact:

  1. Images. Resize them to the size they're shown at, and use modern formats like WebP or AVIF. This alone often halves load time.
  2. Too many plugins and scripts. Every chat widget, slider, tracking pixel and page-builder add-on slows the site. Remove anything you're not actively using.
  3. Hosting. Cheap shared hosting is often the bottleneck. Hosting with a global CDN (a network that serves your site from nearby locations) makes a big difference.
  4. The platform itself. Heavy page builders ship a lot of code. Modern frameworks like Next.js send only what each page needs, which is why we build on them.

Part 2: Mobile-friendly design

A responsive site rearranges itself to fit any screen. Good mobile design goes further:

  • Thumb-friendly buttons, at least about 44 pixels tall, with space between them.
  • Readable text without zooming, at 16px or larger for body copy.
  • Tap-to-call and your main action at the top. Don't make phone users scroll to find your number.
  • Short forms. Ask only for what you need. Every extra field loses people.
  • No pop-ups that cover the screen. Google penalizes intrusive pop-ups on mobile, and people hate them.

Test it yourself: open your site on your own phone and try to do the one thing a customer wants to do, like call, book or get a quote. If it takes more than a few taps, simplify.

Part 3: User experience (UX)

Speed and mobile layout get people in the door. Good UX gets them to act.

  • Answer "what is this?" instantly. Your headline should say what you do and who it's for.
  • One clear next step per page. Book, call or get a quote. Pick one primary button.
  • Simple navigation. Five or six menu items, with plain labels.
  • Proof near the decision. Reviews, client logos and real project photos next to your call to action.
  • Accessibility. Good color contrast, alt text on images and keyboard-friendly menus help everyone and are increasingly expected.

A quick checklist

  • Mobile PageSpeed score above 80
  • Images resized and in a modern format
  • Unused plugins and scripts removed
  • Tap-to-call visible without scrolling
  • Main call to action on every page
  • Menu of 6 items or fewer
  • Tested on a real phone
