Do I need SEO for my website?
What SEO actually is, when a small business needs it, when it doesn't, and what you can do yourself before paying anyone.

A website nobody finds is an expensive business card. SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making sure the right people find you on Google. But not every business needs to pay for it right away. Here's how to tell.
What SEO actually is
SEO is three things working together:
- Technical: Google can load, read and understand your site. That means fast pages, working links, a sitemap and a mobile-friendly design.
- Content: your pages clearly answer what customers are searching for, in the words they actually use.
- Trust: other reputable sites, directories and reviews point to you, which tells Google you're legitimate.
For local businesses, a fourth piece matters a lot: your Google Business Profile, which controls whether you show up in the map results.
You probably need SEO if...
- Customers search for what you sell (for example "AC repair Henderson" or "Las Vegas bookkeeper").
- Competitors show up on Google and you don't.
- Most of your business comes from referrals and you want a steady second channel.
- You're paying for ads and want to rely less on them over time.
You might not need it yet if...
- Your business is 100% referral-based and you're already at capacity.
- Nobody searches for your service online (rare, but it happens in some B2B niches).
- Your website itself is broken. Fix the site first, then do SEO.
What you can do yourself first
Before paying anyone, do these free steps:
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Add photos, hours and services, and choose the right category.
- Ask happy customers for Google reviews. Make it easy by sending them a direct link.
- Give every page a clear title that says what it's about and where you are, like "Tree Trimming in Henderson, NV".
- Make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere online.
- Set up Google Search Console. It's free and shows what people search for to find you.
